Sermon Series: What Disciples Do - Follow Jesus

Key Takeaways

1) Discipleship begins with a call – Jesus called the fishermen (Peter, Andrew, James, John) : “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” (Matt 4:19) — and that call still stands for us today.

2) Leaving things behind matters – Following Jesus often requires leaving something — comfort, status, old ways of living — so that we might truly step into the new life Jesus offers.

3) The invitation is relational and immediate – The call to “follow” is personal (“me”), relational (with Jesus), and immediate (they left their nets and followed). Discipleship is about relationship and action, not just ideas.

4) Following leads into mission – The promise in the call isn’t just about being with Jesus, but also being sent by Jesus (“fish for people”). True following results in engagement with God’s work in the world.

Reflection Questions

--- When I hear Jesus invite me to “follow,” what nets might I need to leave behind (habits, anxieties, priorities) so I can respond more fully?

--- How am I currently practicing relationship with Jesus (listening, obeying, walking with him) rather than simply doing Christian tasks?

--- What is one area of my life where God might be calling me to move — from familiar to unfamiliar — in order to step into discipleship more deeply?

--- In what ways am I being sent by Jesus (via my church, community, workplace) to “fish for people”? How might I take one tangible step this week in that direction?
